Pd. for paper for the Church

Notes

The exact start date for this set of accounts was not recorded. The provided start date is an estimate based on surrounding accounts.

For this accounting year, all transactions appear under headings that read "Anno 1602." These headings are unreliable with regard to dating transactions because at times the scribe wrote out the entire date, including the year, in individual entries, and transactions that occurred in 1603 are included under the "Anno 1602" headings. A heading for the second year for this set of accounts (1603) is never written. Similar discrepancies between headings and the dates found in entries are repeated for several years of accounts.

For this accounting year, all transactions appear under headings that read "Anno 1603." These headings are unreliable with regard to dating transactions because at times the scribe wrote out the entire date, including the year, in individual entries, and transactions that occurred in 1604 are included under the "Anno 1603" headings. TA heading for the second year for this set of accounts (1604) is never written. Similar discrepancies between headings and the dates found in entries are repeated for several years of accounts.

Related transaction: Transaction 13484

The exact start date of this set of accounts was not recorded. Based on surrounding accounts, it likely picks up from when the previous set of accounts left off and thus spanned from 25 April 1603 until 24 April 1604.

These entries immediately follow a transaction dated to 3 May which, according to the dates for this set of accounts, would be 3 May 1603. Elizabeth I died over a month earlier on 24 March 1603. This means that either these payments were made later for a job completed while she was still on the throne, or that this was a deliberate choice made by the parish for unclear reasons. It is unlikely to be a scribal error in which the scribe meant to write "the King's arms" as for decades after this purchase was made, "the late Queen's arms" are recorded in parish inventories. The inventory for 1631 specifically indicates that the Queen's arms were in a frame, likely referring to the purchases made here.

Related transaction: Transaction 13483

It is unclear if this was a hand-drawn image of the Queen's arms or if it was a printed sheet.

The cost is identical to that of setting the Queen's arms in a crest, so it is possible that the cost is a scribal error.
