Note on the records (p. viii)
The Records with which we have to do consist of two books both now in the custody of the Borough of Lambeth. The Early Churchwarden’s Account Book1, sometimes described in the Accounts themselves as the ‘Liger’2, is a thick paper volume, bound in a modern flapped vellum cover with leather overbands and a strap, reproducing the style of the original binding, portions of which survive.3 The size of the folios is roughly 8 ¾ by 12 ½ inches. The paper is watermarked with a dexter hand, displayed palm outwards, with a five-pointed star over the middle finger. […] The verso of the last folio bears a note that the leaves had been numbered on 4 October 1570; that certain leaves had been cut out before the numeration; and that the number of leaves then existing was 314. The numerator did not, however, do his work very accurately; several folio numbers were omitted, and two folios were left unnumbered.4 In addition to these errors, certain changes have been made since the numeration. Fos. 312 and 313 have been cut out, while certain loose papers have been bound in.5
The first Account to be entered in the book is for the year 1504/5; it is followed however by a gap till 1514/15, when the regular series begins. The last Account is that for the year 1645. […] As in the case of so many books of this kind, the last few folios have been used for entering Rate Lists and Parochial Memoranda of various kinds; the Lambeth Book is particularly interesting, however, as containing, between fo. 309 and fo. 313, the Accounts of the parochial Guild of St. Christopher from 1517 to 1538.6
The following notes are from Surrey Record Society No. XL (1940).
